At the office

Posted by: sho In: Photography

Here’s a little something that reminded me of my bro’s favorite show (other than Dexter).

At work trying to manage my short-term and long term digital media needs. I’m jone’sing for a big network attached storage (NAS) device to store all of my precious data, but really just need more compact flash (CF) for my Nikon D70 to take more raw photos of my baby at this point in time. I’ve been shopping around for both but always get confused with CF speeds as they don’t always market their read/write speeds in a uniform manner. Some give you how fast in times (ie. 133x or 300x) while others tell you in mb/s. There is a way to deciper from one to the other. The magic multiplier is 6.66… So if I have the 30mb/s, I’ll just multiply it by 6.66 and get 200x. Here is a simple chart:

45 mb/s = 300x
40 mb/s = 266x
30 mb/s = 200x
20 mb/s = 133x
12 mb/s = 80x

The key here is when you’re shooting RAW or *.NEF (for Nikon users) photos, their sizes are big. My camera produces RAW photos that are around 5mb on average. Thus, if the camera writes faster to the CF card, I can shoot more quickly than with a slower CF; catch more of those special moments. Not to mention that these newer dSLRs shoot in rapid-fire bursts that require a need for speed. Another advantage is read times when reviewing photos as well as downloading them to my computer. I hope this conversion explanation will help some of you who are shopping for digital film.

Baby monitor online!

Posted by: sho In: Personal|Web

Well as you can see, the baby monitor is online and setup for remote viewing. Had to work a little firewall magic to get it running. It works, but no baby in sight. I guess he is hanging out by his food, diapers and grandma.

P.S. This post was published from my iPhone WordPress v1.1 app. It definitely has its perks as it allowed me to choose from pre-existing categories and add tags if I needed to. The photo came out bigger in this post vs. the Shozu post (previous one) too. Very nice!

WordPress to iPhone issues

Posted by: sho In: Web|iPhone

Wish I had more time to troubleshoot this stuff.

Actually, I fixed this. Xml-rpc was enabled in wp-admin, but it was looking for a new file wp-load.php file that I believe is a new addition to one of the latest WordPress updates. Since I use symbolic links, that new addition was never updated. Now when I go to my xmlrpc.php page, I’m getting a “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” instead of errors.

So current status is flickr and shozu iPhone app can post to my wordpress blog. WordPress app v1.1 was having issues before that change was made. I had to delete the blog and then add it again. Sweet success (though I haven’t tried to post from it yet).

Edison is in a good mood

Edison is in a good mood, originally uploaded by sexynojutsu.

It would seem there are an infinite number of ways to post to my blog. Here is a go at posting from flickr. Neat. I may just get that pro account as the photos of this little guy are really stacking up.

little bundle of joy

Posted by: sho In: Personal

Fatherhood. It’s an odd feeling. One that is new, near and dear while simultaneously challenging and stressful. This odd juxtaposition places new stresses where they weren’t felt before. Such as, how much sleep can parents survive on? Or how are you going to take care of the little guy, scheduling-wise, between both parents. It boggles my mind how a single-parent can do the job I find fairly tough for two. As much as I loath the labor that goes into taking care of my baby, when I don’t get to do it (aka Grandma takes care of him for a few hours, etc.) I feel like I am somehow missing out on those “lost opportunities” to see my baby grow. When in retrospect, these little breaks are really little gifts. Gifts to those parents lucky enough to take breaks and care for themselves.

I think that at the root of this odd mixture of feelings is one of protection and trust. I’m sure every parent wants to protect their children for all eternity. Feeling safe enough to entrust family members or some form of a babysitter with your child (or should I say to protect your child) is another thing. Maybe I have trust issues. I think the most issues I have are in the category of parenting fundamentals. As pediatric advice changes or even stays the same from generation to generation, I can’t help but feel through my experience with my own grandparents, that grandparents are there to somehow bend the rules (spoil their grandkids). They may have had a different set of rules to enact on us as babies just as we have learned our very own rules to care for our babies. Everyone’s rules will consist of partly inherited rules and new ones too; be it new laws or newly standardized American Academy of Pediatrics practices. It feels like you are a tax accountant who must always stay on top of the latest IRS changes. Anyways, I feel a mixture of stress that in the end, may not be warrented as our parents must have done most things right as, well, we’re still here today. I just have to get over myself and parenting.

Apple exchange program announced

Posted by: sho In: Apple

Looks like Apple has just made a recall announcement of sorts for their Ultracompact USB Power Adapter that was first released along with the iPhone 3G. Thus if you have one, you can either sign up online for an exchange to be mailed to you with a pre-postage to send the defective one back or you can simply exchange it in-store starting Friday, October 10, 2008. I’ve already ordered mine as it came with my iPhone 3G. I’m thinking if you got it as an accessory, that will be an in-store deal as the online application requires your iPhone’s S/N.

iPhone software progress

Posted by: sho In: Photography|iPhone

Well, I’m happy to say that iPhone software v2.1 has finally listened to its loudest critiques and made some headway.

  • Backups or syncing are definitely faster
  • 3G coverage seems better (I’m getting more bars at this medical center where my wife has gone before and after the software update)

Apps are awesome and are the ever-defining feature of this device. There are so many apps out there that I feel like a Grandpa trying to catch up (though it really is because I have no time as a new father). I always have loved the photo-sharing type apps and have been using shozu for most of my needs (ever since my last phone, motorola razr v3xx). Photojojo researcher, Matt Nuzzaco, put together a great summary of a vast majority of photo apps with reviews of sharing apps, apps specifically for flickr and even tools to measure things like depth of field. Very helpful in a sea full of apps.

What wonderful toys

Posted by: sho In: Personal

I am convinced that toymakers such as Hasbro or Legos can make any toy imagineable. The kid in me is anxious for company as I cannot wait to get some toys for us to play with. Walking the toy aisles of Target has got me so psyched! With all the awesome movies out this summer, there’s a wealth of themed toys available.
totally rad clone wars Lego set

Some of my favorite memories include my grandpa meticulously following instructions to build complex toys. Reading and roughly following directions has stuck with me ever since. These traditions sure gain clarity when their potential to be passed on increase.

WordPress 2.6 compatibility woes

Posted by: sho In: Web|iPhone

So 2 weeks ago I caved in and upgraded to WordPress 2.6 which broke its functionality with Shozu and thus my iPhone 3G. When the WordPress iPhone app became available, I was excited to try it but encountered issues just adding this site -the screen would go black after submitting my information as if it timed out and/or crashed. Today I just downgraded to WordPress v2.5-RC3. I have added my site to the WordPress app successfully on the first try and have also reconnected to Shozu. I wrote a post in Shozu’s support forum which will hopefully help folks who are experiencing similar problems. Also have tried posting a comment under the iPhone WordPress support to see if this is just a special case as they have claimed it compatible with versions “2.5.1 or higher.” I may have to wait for the next revision to upgrade WordPress if I want to enjoy this mobile interoperability.
