So the family woke up as early as we could and headed out toward Boulder City. I’ve been wanting to try out a bike trail that went though some old abandoned railroad tracks that have since been converted to a multi-use trail. More history about it here. In total it was about 6 miles round trip.

I was lugging Edison in the bicycle trailer and the incline was bearable. I don’t think I’ve biked since Dar’s birthday. I do recommend you have knobby treads as it helped immensely. Careful on this trail as there are no rails and steep drops on the side of the mountain.

I give this trail 2 thumbs up for the recreational rider for the gradual incline, the interesting tunnels and the history associated with the trail. You also get to see the Lake Mead marina. We topped it off by stopping by the Coffe Cup Cafe, chowing down on a pork chili verde omlette. Good stuff.

It’s free and pretty neat. The only downside is it used up a ton of battery. So not recommended if it’s your emergency phone. I’ll try and post my other rides when I get around to it.

Darlene just participated in her first 5K run on Saturday, the Second Annual Read and Run for Your Health for the Henderson Library. She finished the 3 miles within 37 minutes which is pretty amazing for a new mom! It started out fairly early so her littlest supporter stayed home as morning’s here are still cold. This event is one of her stepping stones towards participating in the 2009 Mud Run coming up on June 13. Good job honey!

My interests have been turned up to kendo recently. I’ve checked the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) to find no listing for Nevada, which means that it has not really gained popularity this far east of the west coast. A ton in California, though. UNLV doesn’t offer it either, which is where I took several fencing courses. My fear is that I will not be able to find a certified instructor. I feel like at this point and time, if I learn something, I’d rather not learn it twice to erase bad habits learned the first time around.

The other long-time interest I’ve had was in Russian kettlebell strength training. I’ve certainly wanted to have a home gym because of the insta-convenience. However, I’d rather look into kettlebells rather than a Bowflex. I do believe there are a handfull of certified Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) instructors in the Las Vegas area. The benefit of starting out with an instructor, is they bring all the equipment to you. However, there are good books and instructional videos on the subject as well. I guess it’s good to write this down so I can remind myself to look into this next year.
