This is my longest ride of the year thus far: 21 miles. I think I may have done 20 odd miles a couple years back when I had a working bicycle computer. I’ve gotten back on the saddle (of my Raleigh 2005 M20) in the name of “boy I need to exercise,” and it’s been working out fairly well. Much to the thanks of MapMyRide app on my iPhone which encourages me to make public my progress via GPS tracking. Just today, I’ve completed their “Spring into Fitness: Century in 30 days”. I was able to complete it in 24 days and am very proud of myself for going out there and doing something with the decent weather Las Vegas has before the heat descents. I rode this afternoon in 90′s and was pretty happy with it. Hopefully the heat doesn’t dissuade me too much. Here is the fly-by google maps view of my longest ride to date.

So every other Wednesday, my phone alarm thinks I still have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get my butt to work when, really, it’s my day off. I’ve been dying to get my mountain bike out for a spin for the last month but never got the momentum to do it. I finally get there at around 7am and these out of towners ask me about the trail. I tell them how it goes and totally forget about the trail on the south side of Blue Diamond (which is more difficult and the way they ended up going).

I’m feeling pretty good as I usually start off. I met this guy who was out there like me and he had the clip-in shoes and recommended I get a helmet, which is on my to-do list. As I make my way back from the far end of the figure-8, the ascent begins to kill the buzz I was digging. I end up walking my bike for a good half-mile. Now I didn’t get the feeling I was going to throw up like previous times, but I did get the feeling I’m out of shape a good bit. Other things I want to tackle is that 13-mile loop in Red Rock and this man-made path in Henderson that goes on forever. We shall see as any type of activity will now need to be done in the early morning as afternoons are heating up.

For some reason, Map My Ride iphone app did not record my whole figure-8, so I’m thinking it’s because it’s not the paid version. Bummer.

The extra distance to the parking garage from last weeks midpoint was more challenging as there it was riddled with hilly terrain. Translation: I almost died trying to tow Edison on the way back. It was a good challenge.

And on the way back, we got a treat as we saw close to 10 Bighorn Sheep, Nevada’s official state animal, traversing across our trail along the steep mountainside. All in all, it was a great ride and this time, fully explored.
